Bounty Killer says Guinness Icon award “is like a Grammy”
Guinness Greatest Dancehall Icon Bounty Killer has likened his award to a Grammy after being selected the number one icon of all time by the public.
“Very surprising and I'm very elated about it. It’s like a Jamaican Grammy to me,” said Bounty Killer.
In commemoration of Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of Independence, Guinness asked its consumers to select the Guinness 50 Greatest Icons and also the number one icon of all time.
Bounty Killer, born Rodney Pryce, emerged as the greatest dancehall icon based on his popularity, social impact and sheer lyrical and deejaying prowess.
As a part of his number one iconic status, Bounty Killer will receive a $500,000 grant from Guinness that will go towards a community development programme. Bounty says he wants to help curb illiteracy among adults in the inner-city.
“The most important problem is illiteracy so ideally my donation will be some Education program for a scholarship for ghetto people to uplift them to read and write better. They are the ones that voted most so they deserve the support from me. If we have a better educated nation Jamaica will lead the world in many ways as we Jamaicans are great,” said Bounty.
Guinness brand manager Racquel Nevins said Guinness would be partnering with Jamaica Foundation for Lifelong Learning and Bounty Killer to provide in-house literacy training for inner-city persons.
“We see this as an important initiative in showcasing the positive impact of Dancehall by having an artiste such as Bounty Killer giving back to the community,” said Nevins.
Nevins said the Dancehall Icons activity and the community project fits with Guinness’ inspirational theme of ordinary people making a mark on the world and, by so doing, benefit the community.
Bounty Killer, who has always been a strong advocate for the upliftment of inner-city residents, had this to say:
“Believe in yourself. Have lots of aspirations and work hard at each of them. When a dream comes true it’s the best thing possible. Keep convicted, work hard and then nobody can discourage you to be a success.”
